Science Kits

Wow, oh wow!!! We are lucky little campers!!

Today we were able to explore one of the science kits from Active Minds Aotearoa and what fun did we have...

We had children who were absolutely ecstatic with themselves and their groups as the LED lights lit up.

What a great day exploring the realms of science.

Today's PBL (Problem Based Learning)

Today's challenge is to make a bridge to get the car across the blocks.  You are not allowed to use anything else other than the blocks, paper and car.

One piece of paper, it is not allowed to be cut.

How would you solve this???

Attempt one: What happened?

  • A LOT of discussion
  • sharing of ideas
  • excited children!
  • some successes
  • a bridge collapsed after 2 cars were put on
  • 7 is the largest amount of cars able to be placed on a bridge at one time.
  • We had some wobbly bridges
  • We had some narrow bridges
Attempt two:  What happened?

  • Even MORE discussion
  • A lot more excitement!!
  • The bridges were a lot sturdier
  • The celebrations and commiseration's were a LOT louder!!!!!!!! :)
  • We had 6 bridges who took the full load of 7 cars.

Last Swim

Our kid's have really enjoyed the pool this year.  They made the most of their last swim and had a blast!!

PBL - Little Red Riding Hood

Problem: Little Red Riding Hood needs to get to Grandma's without walking through the woods as they aren't safe for her.

Solution:  She could fly to Grandma's house!!!

We spent our time investigating 3 different designs for paper planes before we created our own plane.  The children were able to test their creations out on the turf.

It was a very creative and thought provoking session.

Spaghetti Tower Challenge

The challenge:

Use 20 pieces of spaghetti, 2 marshmallows and 3 pieces of tape to build a tower that stands without support.  There must be a marshmallow at the top and you must use ALL the spaghetti!

Whaaaaaat????   Sound a bit tricky?

WELL IT WAS!

Leave a comment below telling us what you learned from this challenge.

Grass People

Pae-Ake means to grow with our learning.  We made grass people to represent our learning.  We had the roots of the grass showing through the clear cups, which is the roots we put down for the foundation of our learning.

We had the extremely long grass, which shows our children reaching for the stars as they have only just begun their learning journey.

The kids have really enjoyed watching our grass grow and have learnt that you need to take care of our plants as well as our learning environment to make sure that learning can happen.

Swimming

This is the last week for swimming.  We have had great sessions in the water and have really seen our children's water confidence grow!!

It was great watching our kids in the swimming sports too.

Have a look at the photos that were taken on the day on our school's flickr account...
