  • It was fun using science to make art - Jess
  • Today we made art using marbles, inclined plane and paint to make science artwork! - Layla
  • We made art using marbles and paint.  The inclined plane helped us make it easier - Hannah H
  • We have been focusing on simple machines and today we choose inclined planes - Ella
  • Today we were shaking around messy tote trays.  Some of them got really messy - Hannah C

Catapult!!!

During our explore time on Friday we made some catapults using iceblock sticks and rubber bands!  We had a lot of fun exploring these simple machines.  Take a look at our work and see if you can recreate these at home??

Testing out Forces

We tried to lift our buddies (dead weight) by standing over them and lifting. We then realised that was very difficult... UNTIL we took a few steps back.  Look at our pics!!!

Work and Simple Machines

What is work???
  • go to places and help people
  • hammering nails
  • job
  • somebody tells you to do it
  • having a boss
  • working at a job
  • homework
  • working out - exercise
  • What is science work??? lifting, moving, pushing, pulling, pushing down
What does work have to do with simple machines?
  • sometimes work involves simple machines
  • work is different than simple machines
  • they are different
  • how to work simple machines
  • makes work easier
We watched a video about work and simple machines.  This is what we found out:
  • simple machines help us with our work
  • make things move
  • inclined plane is also known as a ramp
  • Wedge: a chisel, a knife cutting cheese and an axe cutting wood.
  • Screw: Spiral staircase, road wrapping around a mountain
  • Lever: a piece of wood trying to move a rock, a wheelbarrow, a see saw.  The lever must have a fulcrum - the point at which it moves
  • Wheel and axel:  door knob, motor cycle and car
  • Pulley: flag pole, allows someone to pull a heavy object easier.
What is a force???
  • effort when trying to move an object

Our clever little cookies!!

We have been practising our sign language this week.  Our children were given a challenge to learn how to spell their name using the sign language alphabet.

Here are some examples of their hard work and determination
